“We’ll opt for MongoDB, because we need scalable technology” – I hear this statement over and over again especially from students and fresh graduates wishing to adopt a hip and cool tech-stack (looks good on a CV, for sure).
However I would like to point this out: the latest technology doesn’t always equate to a good fit-for-purpose. MongoDB (and its cousins) should not be the de-facto choice for startups.
Have a look at this great resource, from the people who are quite familiar with issues of scale: http://webscalesql.org/index.html
This is not an opinion, but a statement of truth
Technology is like a wardrobe – if a shirt is fashionable, it won’t necessarily look good on everyone.
